Though she doesn’t have a clue what you’re saying, Ebbey listens to all her email. She especially likes the words bunny, kitty, naughty ridgeback and bone. We can’t read the word coyote, as Ebbey immediately runs to the window to bark for long periods of time. (Coyotes chewed up Ebbey when she was starving, 50 pounds and lost. It is hidden some where in her memories. However, after 2 years of captivity and domestic living, Ebbey can't seem to remember exactly why.

A cat was recently sitting outside a neighbor's home, where two dogs also live. As Ebbey approached, the cat stood her ground and quickly began arching her back. Ebbey stalked the cat within 4 feet, but would go no closer. Unfortunately she would not leave the stand off either. So I had to drag her away. Of course the cocky kitty then stalked us for a while...which led to more Ebbey dragging.

Click here for more Ebbey photos and Trivia.

Tick Taxi Service

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_KWUU-2L8CQA/RnN8QVIn46I/AAAAAAAAAAc/MFQ5ktxMvfk/s320/sitee16bs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5076537824969745314" />

Been very busy chasing bunnies, kitties and mousies. We met several friendly dogs, then a male golden retriever tried to bite her face and made her whine. (One reason why I now severely limit our visits to off leash areas.) It's important to keep her socialized with strange dogs, but about 10 to 20 percent of the dogs are potentially aggressive.

There's a book called:
Pets at risk: from allergies to cancer, remedies for an unsuspected epidemic by Plechner, Alfred J., which suggests that many dogs now have endocrine problems and aggression could be one of the symptoms. Though alarming, it is an interesting book for pet owners which dispels some rumors about vaccinations, pet food and pet medications.

Second Full Walk after Surgery

Though Ebbey's recuperation is rapid, we got caught in the rain yesterday on our walk and it really seemed to zap her energy. Walking with the Rottweiler, Ebbey immediately did a spinning bark alert. I gave a sharp harsh no. Despite my reprimand, the Rotti gave a good bark and got a smack with my empty glove. Generally, when there is any kind of prey, neither dog pays any attention to me. Tonight, I got lucky and they both listened. Then we stood there quietly for a few seconds and watched the doe forage.

When Ebbey was first adopted, she chased several deer with a dog we were walking with. I started to run after the dogs, but could not keep them in my sight. After the other dog came back, I was pretty certain I'd lost Ebbey for good. Deers can kill a dog, so I try to discourage this behavior.

Sneaky Bunnies

Hiding in trees roots, by the door, but I found him.

Allex Michael: A snowshoe hare decided to hide right by the front entrance as the dogs and I returned home from a walk. Plus it cooled her down on a hot day.

Ground Bird Frenzy

I'm so quiet, those naughty birdies didn't even see me.

Allex Michael: While catching up on some reading, Ebbey and I were out in the backyard. Oblivious to the rawhide chewing dog, the partridge family flew in to feed on fallen seeds from the bird feeder. Their young chicks ducked under the fence and scurried over to join them. A great skirmish erupted. As Ebbey lunged after the birds, several chicks took refuge under the deck. We then had to go inside, concerned the parents would abandon the chicks as MIA. Luckily all were eventually reunited within the hour.
Hungarian partridge chicks were the size of sparrows when I first saw them. Now, a month later, they are nearly the size of their parents.

Porcupine Encounter

After the last encounter, and all the yelling, I'm a bit more wary this time. Though with the determination of my walking partner, I still went along to get a closer look.

Allex Michael: Ebbey's first porcupine encounter was with her boyfriend Grizzly.

Some of that experience stuck, because Ebbey did not lead the charge to see the porcupine. However, the Rottweiler has apparently not yet had a porcupine experience and was very determined to attack it.

The three of us have seen porcupines on several occasions, but always from a reasonably safe distance. A few times we watched, from a pedestrian overpass, as one walked along the highway below. We also were able to circle one as it tried to escape us along a walking path.

But this time, no such luck. I saw the porcupine before either of the dogs, and began walking up the hill to make a large circle around the creature. Then both of the dogs saw the miniature porcupine. Ebbey responded to my warning, but the Rotti took off and pulled me off my feet. I should mention that she does this wearing a halti. Ebbey then also joined the pursuit, with both dogs dragging me through deep grass. There wasn't much I could do to stop them. The three to five second pull seemed like a lifetime as I imagined being pulled onto the porcupine. Once out of the grass, I was now being dragged along a strip of pavement and fast approaching the young porcupine's tail. Suddenly, Ebbey veered off to the side and away from the porcupine. Luckily this, and the burning of my elbow flesh on asphalt was enough to stop the Rottweiler from dragging me face first into those porcupine quills. I came to a stop about two feet (60cm) from the quills. The Rotti just stood there staring at the porcupine. Why isn't this thing running? Scrambling to avoid a backwards quill attack, I got up pulled the dogs well away from the porcupine and then started cussing them both out. They sit when in trouble, but I haven't been this mad since they drug me through fresh dog poop. Or perhaps it was the cow poop incident. As we continued walking, my elbow burned all the way. A long sleeved shirt had provided some initial protection, but then the polyester fibers had worsened the burn. Returning home, I turned out to be one large grass stain.

Mistress Scared of Me

She always covers her eyes when she sleeps.

Allex Michael: Especially during hot summers, I often end up working at night and sleep during the day. Out on a late night walk, two guys drove by in two old beater cars. Despite Ebbey and the Rottweiler's presence, they drove by us two more times...sizing us up. After the third time, we hid behind a hedge and watched as they drove past for a fourth time. Both men appeared to be searching for us. If they don't move, I know they are fake.

Ebbey on occasion, but mostly the Rottweiler sees a lawn ornament and mistakes it for potential prey.

Allex Michael: Some urban areas seem overrun with snowshoe hares the last few years. So Ebbey smells hare scent where ever we walk. One night six hares were parked on someone's lawn and remained totally motionless as myself and the two dogs walked by. After watching the hares for some time, both dogs became certain they were lawn ornaments because no bunny can stay still that long.

The Ebbey Rottweiler Relationship

Allex Michael: Ebbey and I now cohabit with a once rescued Rottweiler. Despite claims to the contrary, the rotti isn't great around other dogs. Ebbey can't go in the backyard with the rottweiler and play, as the Rotti's idea of fun is bite chases. Even under supervision. Ebbey is slightly fearful of her new roommate, and will quickly give up her food if the Rottweiler moves in on her dish. It was dicey for the six months, as the Rottweiler wanted to be top dog of the household and the only thing standing in her way is Ebbey. However, Ebbey loves her and having a Rottweiler roomate has it's benefits. Walk time is now mostly carefree. With the Rottweiler taking care of security, Ebbey can now focus on tracking scent and searching for critters. Ebbey also now has terrific backup when packs of coyotes venture too close.

Nail Saga Continues

My mistress has found a new way to torture me.

Allex Michael: Cutting Ebbey's nails remains a huge chore. The dog is so strong that even with an assistant sitting on her, she will not allow me to cut her fast growing black ridgeback nails. The last two times she tried to bite the assistant which is no laughing matter with a dog her size. When she started avoiding areas of the house where nail cutting may occur, I switched over to using a Dremel tool with a round sander. The first few times were very difficult, as she was fearful of the sound, but she reacts better when not held down. Sanding her back claws are easier and better tolerated than sanding the front ones. Plus, I'm better off alone as she would never dare bite me. Unlike the sharp cutters, there has never been any blood flow and one to two sandings per week seems to be breaking even on the nail growing front. Other than taking significantly longer, the only other drawback is airborne nail dust. She doesn't like people looking at her teeth, so I've never gotten such a good look as today. Plus there is just the one tooth with a noticeable brown mark. When I made a fuss, she became very upset. It's normal for pack animals to hide any weakness, out of fear they will lose status in the pack. But it's as if she remembered the event that led to the damage. She's also become a more picky eater, and will vomit if her stomach is empty. Vomiting isn't all that bad for a dog, but you have to remember that Ebbey vomited up to 7 times a day when I first adopted her so I prefer to keep enough food in her stomach to avoid this.
I changed to a more fatty type of ground beef last fall, not only due to the price, but because dogs need some fat in their diet. Especially during the colder months of winter. My scales disappeared in the chaos that is my life, and I also became lazy about weighing Ebbey's food for every meal. As a result, the dog's weight soared to over 95 pounds (44kg). Fifteen pounds (7kg) more than she weighed the previous fall. Despite being on a diet for the last 4 weeks, she has not lost a single pound. This is the opposite problem I had after first adopting her, as I couldn't get her to gain weight. Will have to try harder.

Big Kitty

I recognize that big kitty.

Ebbey often watches tv shows about animals, but was particularly enamored by an episode of Killer Instinct about the Lynx. Crossing a pedestrian walkway, over the highway, two coyotes had the same idea from the other direction. Ebbey hates coyotes and began her rigid leg bark attack routine. So I guided both dogs back across the bridge with the coyotes lingering to watch. We stopped to watch them from a safe distance, but neither dog would look in their direction. Come to think of it, the coyote alarm (Ebbey) had also stopped barking. As I soon discovered, they were watching three additional coyotes who were crossing the highway to come around at us from another direction. The three of us can fend off two to three coyotes, but I prefer to retreat when they start ganging up.

Slow Moving Bunnies

Two strange looking bunnies hesitated a very long time as we bounded towards them.

Ebbey will stalk just about anything, including her doggie pals.

Two weird looking snowshoe hares turned out to be two white cats. Ebbey is an incredibly fast runner, so is able to keep up with most snowshoe hares. Perhaps the fence was the deterrent, but I was just so grateful she actually returned. A black shepherd bouvier cross who was exceptionally well trained with just 15 minute training sessions per day. People would always remark how well behaved my first dog was, heeling off leash in the most stressful of situations. Because of this, I would look at people with badly behaved dogs and wonder why they just didn't take a little time to train their dog.

Adopting Ebbey added some karma to my life. Found starving in a garbage dump, I cut her some slack after our training sessions made little progress. Determined to have a well trained companion, like my first dog, I increased training to twice daily and added food incentives. Ebbey's behavior greatly improved but the results are still disappointing when prey presents itself. After about eighteen months, I've also given up any hope that she will ever heel off leash. In fact, I'm just happy when she doesn't pull me to the ground while chasing a bunny.

Now, people with well trained dogs, watch Ebbey dragging me down the street and wonder why I just don't take a little time to train the unruly beast.

Life is the Chase

I live for the hunt!

Allex Michael: As a Rhodesian ridgeback (hunting dog) likely crossed with a lab (another hunting dog), most of Ebbey's brain is geared towards scent and pursuing prey. I saw what looked like a dog, but his smell gave him away.

Ebbey has greeted dogs as small as two miniature dachshunds, which are about the size of a hot dog. So when we went to the pet store, and she looked through the glass, her tail began to wag upon seeing a short brown furry creature with an unusually large head. Within a few seconds, Ebbey’s tail stopped wagging. This dog just didn’t smell right. In fact it smelled more like a bunny than it did a dog. Her legs became rigid, as Ebbey stood there staring through the glass. The brown furry creature looked back, then started eating. Though with a baby sitter, she has started refusing to eat when I am gone or asleep. Plus she’s always really stressed out by the time I return and more naughty than normal. We met up with a really nice golden retriever. It was bitterly cold, but the two dogs played a bit. Though only a year apart in age, Ebbey was so eager to burn off the stress, she was down right obnoxious in her efforts to play with her new friend. Barking and running back and forth. The well behaved golden didn’t know what to make of her. It turns out the golden has very bad allergies and her health has suffered greatly because of it. This is her owner’s first dog and I felt so bad, not only because of the stress involved with a sickly pet, but the cost. Apparently the vets did not diagnose allergies for the first couple years and only medicated the symptoms. The poor dog has had several surgeries and lives on a daily regimen of steroids and a vegetarian diet. Guess I’m lucky that I quickly refused a similar type of treatment for Ebbey and went the homeopathic route. After the first round of vet’s pills and cortisone shot made no impact on Ebbey’s symptoms, I started to research her conditions. I have allergies myself and surprisingly Ebbey’s her symptoms were very close to my own. I started her on a homemade elimination diet and bathed her skin with a homemade anti itch formula. After 4 months of sleepless nights, dousing her skin and keeping her covered in old t-shirts, I finally got a couple foods she could eat - beef and brown rice. As she gradually improved, and her immune system strengthened, I would add one food a week and see if she reacted to it. Though there are only about 15 or 20 different foods she can eat with out a reaction, Ebbey is now a very healthy dog. Unfortunately, most people work away from home and are unable to deal with an allergic pet. It’s just good timing that I am making my first film and the dog is almost always with me so I can take care of her.

I Love all Dogs

Big or small, I love every dog.

Walking in an urban park, Ebbey was suddenly surrounded by a pack of roaming miniature fluffies. Sometimes I can even get her to hand feed me.

Ebbey was found starving in a garbage dump and it took a number of months before her immune system improved. She would vomit up to seven times a day, unless fed every few hours. Because of this, and even though Ebbey is now very healthy, I am always scared when she doesn’t eat. I’ve even gone as far as hand feeding her, just enough to prevent her from vomiting up bile.
She gets fed three times a day and because of allergies, has a very small list of foods she can eat. Her meals consist of either .4 pounds (180 grams) of cooked ground beef, elk or bison plus brown rice. At dinner time she also gets a tablespoon of ground broccoli and jicama which is a Mexican type potato. Plus a clove of minced garlic and a tablespoon of olive oil. As of late, Ebbey has become increasingly disinterested in her limited diet. So I’ve been adding a bit of ground beef liver to one or two meals per day. Once or twice weekly she gets a large tablespoon of raw pumpkin, millet and blueberries on occasion. Though mildly allergic, I also try to give her a couple tablespoons of salmon or sardines once or twice a week. Turkey is also good except that she will start scratching if given more than twice a week. Most every other food causes a reaction. She also gets ground vitamins, though I have to be careful there as well for allergies. So unless the meat is freshly prepared she gets a bit picky and refuses to eat or expects to be hand fed.

Big Bad Trucks

The sound of a truck still scares me.

Found starving in a garbage dump, Ebbey lived as a stray for an unknown period of time. Mostly because they get to eat food, she is not allowed to eat because of her allergies. They are also more cunning than a dog or wolf and Ebbey seems to know it. Whenever a medium to small dog barks, she is certain it is trying to warn her of some impending danger. She looks around, but rarely sees what they are barking at. Of course the dog is barking at her. Whenever a large dog barks, Ebbey becomes nervous. She appears worried that the big dog is after her. It’s not so bad now that she walks with the rottweiler. But she still keeps her eyes open.

My first dog was a shepherd cross, which is why it saddens me that Ebbey is scared of shepherds. One attacked her when I first got her, and she has been wary of them ever since. She got along well with a shepherd who is the film Search Dog’s Raven, but becomes very anxious when we meet most shepherds.

Ebbey was playing with a border collie poodle cross, when a large black shepherd stormed towards the two dogs. Both dogs reacted submissively and the shepherd seemed focussed on dominating or biting the poodle cross. Ebbey ran after them to help her playmate, though not actively starting anything. Luckily the shepherd finally returned to it’s owner before any damage was done. Once he was on a leash, and realizing he couldn’t get her, Ebbey went into a stalking position. With her Rhodesian ridgeback heritage, it was as if he was a dangerous lion and she was about to do him in. However, she never did follow through.

Elevated Mousy

My mistress often says the word mousy, which means there is one on the deck just outside the glass patio doors. With several bird feeders, we also support a number of mice in the backyard. One in particular shows no sign of fear when Ebbey glares at him through the glass. He has even been trying to get into the warm house, by squeezing through the patio doors and climbing up the screen. This time he climbed up the entire screen door and just perched there.

Another Good Chase Halted

With my rottweiler friend, we could have captured the deer. When I first got Ebbey, she and two other canine playmates chased a couple deer through a large park and across several roads. Ebbey was shriek barking, she was so excited. Minutes after the other two dogs returned, I thought I’d lost her for good or she had been badly kicked or run over by a car. Grizzly’s owner and I were discussing recent porcupine sightings and within seconds both dogs were circling the young porcupine. Her quills were already erect and the dogs were circling closer and closer. I immediately ran up near the tail and started yelling at the dogs. Luckily, Ebbey came back submissively after the third yell. I put her back on leash and held her between me and the porcupine’s tail. She wears a harness, which gives me a fair amount of control. Grizzly, on the other hand, was not responding. His owner remained at a safer distance screaming for the dog to return. As I kept warning Grizzly not to approach, I tried to block his approaches to the porcupine. Finally, he went back to his owner. I was very pleased that Ebbey minded me. Allergies irritate the ear’s mast cells which leads to increased production of ear wax and other secretions, which can then become infected by skin bacteria and attract yeast spores unless regularly cleaned. Infections occur much faster in floppy eared dogs, due to increased temperature and less air flow. No matter how careful I am with Ebbey’s diet, allergies flare up from time to time. Strangers sometimes feed her a biscuit without asking, which can lead to her vomiting. Even chewing the wrong tree branch or eating a bug can trigger itching. Luckily, Ebbey’s health is now very good and most reactions now involve a bit of scratching and increased ear discharge. You can always tell when there is a problem, as she either starts shaking her ear or it may also feel very hot. I’ve avoided any ear infections by cleaning the ear daily.

Coyote Vigil

Coyotes followed us home and I must protect the house.

Ebbey got into a bit of trouble today. Ebbey is a Rhodesian ridgeback cross and has very high instincts when it comes to potential prey. Today is a good example. Despite oncoming cars, Ebbey stopped to smell a scent in the middle of the road and was virtually immovable. Pulling, and soon yelling, I was unable to budge her from the scent. Luckily I finally yanked her across the road before we became roadkill.

Alien Bunny

It seemed dead, but then it’s shiny blue eyes followed us.

Before dawn, a very unusual creature was lying in the middle of the highway. It looked wet, and I thought it may be covered in blood. The light revealed an unusual blue eye shine, so we wondered if it was injured. As we walked closer, for a better look, the alien creature turned out to be a discarded house plant. It’s large roots splayed out like legs from a broken jewel encrusted pot. The two large blue acrylic stones looked like eyes from certain angles, and Ebbey’s rottweiler walking partner remained certain this was some kind of alien bunny. During the winter, they often feed on bird seed which smaller birds drop on the ground from our bird feeder. We also throw wheat down for them.

Ebbey really gets excited when they visit. She sometimes makes convincing displays to go outside, but her real aim is to chase partridge. She regularly searches for these ground birds on walks, hoping to catch one as they take off in flight. Except for this one day. Three birds took off, but one bird remained on the ground and just stood there. Living in a garbage dump, Ebbey has learned not to judge by size. (Except for mice. All mice are up for grabs.) Garbage dump cats are extremely fierce and Ebbey will not chase a cat that stands it's ground. Seeing this small gray partridge standing it's ground, Ebbey thought twice. By then I had her collar and the bird scrambled away. I suspect it was a young bird who had just used up one of it's lives.

This one night we saw a partridge scalp itself on a powerline. Feathers flew as the bird skinned it's head and back. Not a good mistake during the cold of winter.

Love the Bunny

Ebbey: One day I will catch the bunny!

Urban snowshoe hare populations have increased lately in the west, and they seem to be everywhere. I chant that she must Love the Bunny...and sometimes this reduces the screams. When walking with the J (a large rescued rottweiler cross), the two dogs have dragged me through a number of different terrain while chasing the bunny. It took a day to reorganize the boxes, and now Ebbey has a nice corner window bed to look outside. Granted, there is only a two foot wide path through the room of boxes, but the ongoing rain has provided a jungle of green foliage for the former starving stray to survey.

One bird feeder hangs near one corner window, with a trough feeder on the other side. Larger birds like crows, magpies and even the odd raven frequent the trough. Though resentful that chicken liver is being fed to such creatures, Ebbey has now resigned herself to this fact. Even smaller birds like chickadees and robins seem to like the beef fat. Purchased at an incredible savings, I soon discovered Ebbey is allergic to chicken and any part thereof including their liver.

We also have quite a community of mice and voles, surviving on the bird left overs that fall to the ground. This is particularly entertaining for Ebbey as she has been known to consume such critters. This is likely how she survived during her abandoned days, though she is allergic to mice as well. Anytime she holds one in her mouth, and the frightened creature does what a frightened creature does when held in the jaws of death, Ebbey soon starts scratching and rubbing.

Some of the mice are barely the size of a penny, and seem to have about as much sense. A certain percentage of these runty rodents are predated by the crows and magpies. I’ve also witnessed a falcon kill a sparrow feeding at the bird feeder. It was dark and no one else was around. Bu has her moments of vigor, but generally drags along behind. As we passed a green area, a silhouetted coyote was standing under a street light. Ebbey wasn’t quite sure what kind of dog this was and reluctantly continued to walk. Within seconds, she broke into her viscous bark coyote screaming mode as the coyote and a second one crossed the street behind us. Keeping all three dogs in close proximity, I tried to usher the scream barking and circling ridgeback down the hill. Ebbey’s screaming suddenly became more violent as the coyotes crossed back and began following. They seemed attracted to her distress and were moving in for an opportunity to poach Bu. Despite my cussing, Ebbey’s scream barking and the J’s aggressive circles the coyotes kept coming towards us. Finally a few cars turned off the freeway and they took off. I like coyotes, but am annoyed that some urban dwellers have become so aggressive. Not many country coyotes would be this bold.

Dog Stranger

Ebbey: There's One Dog I Just Won’t Watch.

Whenever there's a break, I try to sort through usable shots I’ve archived. He was only about 50 feet away. Ebbey broke into scream barking mode, and began jump circling as the other two dogs watched. Ebbey bumped Bu in her fervor, knocking the old dog onto her butt. This led me to grab the scruff of Ebbey’s neck for a reprimand. Just about the same time, her harness broke. Someone was looking out for us, as this prevented Ebbey from running at the coyote and possibly getting herself maimed or worse. Someone had found the remains of a border collie sized dog, in this coyote’s territory, so I’m not sure how a crazed ridgeback would fare against a big male.

Pet Store Visit

Ebbey: After waiting in the car, forever, I got to sniff toys and food but never got any.

Took Ebbey into a large pet store for a second visit. Luckily the golden was all growl and no bite. Ebbey was still a bit frightened, with the ridge on her back totally raised.
